Do mosquitoes that transmit dengue primarily live indoors or outdoors?

Ravana Tour Specialist July 23, 2026

Aedes aegypti, the main vector for dengue, is really well adapted to human environments, and it actively breeds and takes meals, both indoors and outdoors, depending on the situation.

Also, unlike many other mosquito species that choose more natural outdoor spots, this dengue mosquito tends to linger in dark, cooler indoor resting areas such as under furniture, inside wardrobes, or behind curtains. It can reproduce well in tiny amounts of clean stagnant water that collects around homes, so travellers need to be just as careful about stopping bites within their hotel room as they would be while moving around outside.
