Surfing in Arugam Bay during the off-season (November to March) is usually not a good idea. This time matches the Northeast monsoon, and it typically brings lots of rainfall, harsh onshore winds, and a more chaotic, choppy kind of wave pattern.

In those months, the steady winds can disrupt the wave structure, so the usual point breaks become pretty much unrideable. Also, many local surf businesses, eateries, and places to stay end up closing down or running at minimum capacity. If you are in Sri Lanka between November and March, a better option is to head toward the South and Southwest coasts (like Weligama, Mirissa, or Hikkaduwa), where drier weather and offshore winds help deliver cleaner, more reliable surfing conditions.
