Are there sharks at the Arugam Bay surf spots?

While sharks naturally live around the wider Indian Ocean, there aren’t any official records of shark attacks on surfers in Arugam Bay. In practice, the place feels exceptionally safe when it comes to dangerous marine predators.

You might occasionally see small, calm reef sharks out farther in deeper water, but they do not usually linger near the shallow coastal reef or the sand breaks where people surf. The local surfing community, plus the coastal authorities, keep an eye on the water continuously. The most likely sea creatures surfers run into in the line-up are harmless sea turtles, dolphins, and tropical reef fish.
