Are there any wild tigers native to Sri Lanka?

Ravana Tour Specialist July 14, 2026

No, there are no wild tigers native to Sri Lanka. On the island, the top land predator is the endemic Sri Lankan leopard, meaning you won’t see a wild tiger population living anywhere in the country.

Many visitors ask about tigers because Sri Lanka is so close to India, but these big cats are simply not part of the local ecosystem. There is also no history or even fossil evidence that suggests tigers ever roamed the island. So, instead of searching for tigers, wildlife enthusiasts visiting places like Wilpattu National Park or Udawalawe National Park can observe a wide range of other species. The protected zones here are especially well-known for Sri Lankan sloth bears, mugger crocodiles, and large herds of wild Asian elephants.
