Why are baby elephants brought to Elephant Transit Home?
Baby elephants are taken to the Udawalawe Elephant Transit Home when they need rescue and rehabilitation. This includes cases where they are orphaned, left behind, separated from their mothers, or discovered in situations that call for wildlife help.
Some calves come after injuries or accidents. Others arrive when they are linked to human–elephant conflict. At the centre, staff provide food, medical treatment, and daily care. They also work to help the elephants regain strength and learn the natural behaviours needed for release later.
