Which side of the road do motorcycles use in Sri Lanka?
Motorbikes in Sri Lanka use the left side of the road. This rule holds everywhere, from busy town roads to country stretches, from hill routes to coastal stretches. It applies no matter where the rider normally drives.
If you are used to right-hand traffic, slow down near crossings. Take extra care at junctions, when you turn onto smaller roads, and when you join a roundabout. On most normal two-way roads, people overtake on the right only when it is allowed and safe.
While you adjust to the left side, also stay alert for buses, pedestrians, and animals. Watch for vehicles that pull out from narrow side roads. For many visitors, a brief ride in a calm area helps you get used to the feel before you start a longer trip.
