Where is the famous elephant gathering in Minneriya?

The so-called “Great Gathering” of elephants takes place near the retreating edge of the old Minneriya Reservoir, inside Minneriya National Park, in Sri Lanka’s North Central Province.

This jaw-dropping wildlife event happens every year during the dry season, and the busiest time usually lands between August and September. When smaller watering holes run out across the Cultural Triangle, up to 300 wild Asian elephants move towards the reservoir to drink, to wallow, and to feed on the fresh grass coming up along the shoreline.
