Having an open tattoo that shows the Buddha, or any other Buddhist deity, is seen as very disrespectful in Sri Lanka, and it is also handled harshly, with strict penalties that can lead to immediate arrest, visa cancellation, and deportation. Sri Lankan law seems to guard religious sensitivities very actively, so Buddhist depictions are treated as sacred markings, not something for decoration or casual display.

At the airport, immigration officers may look closely at visitors for tattoos once you arrive. If you do have a Buddha tattoo, you must make sure it stays fully covered by clothes at all times, from the time you land through to the time you depart. Also, you should never pose for a photo with your back turned towards a Buddha statue. Local authorities often read that as a severe signal of disregard, and that can quickly become a problem.
