What happens if my Sri Lanka visa expires while I am there?

Ravana Tour Specialist August 27, 2026

Staying in a country after your visa expires counts as an immigration violation. It can lead to large fines that add up each day you remain in Sri Lanka past the expiry date.

The fine is not the only issue. Officials also treat this kind of breach as serious. At the airport on your way out, you may be held for extra checks and interviews. In some cases, you could be detained. You may also receive a formal entry ban later on, which stops you from coming back. Make sure you keep a close watch on your visa expiry date, and do not rely on memory.
