Is Sri Lanka safe for non-binary travellers?

Non-binary travellers may find Sri Lanka safe overall, but they should also get ready for a society that runs on a very traditional gender binary system. Even if malice is rare, getting misgendered is practically unavoidable because of language constraints and cultural conditioning, too.

Gender is understood in a rather old-fashioned way there. Waitstaff, guides, and hotel personnel will frequently reach for terms like “Sir” or “Madam” as a form of politeness. They do it automatically, without thinking about non-binary identities or even realising the nuance. Visitors might be better served by seeing these moments as cultural mismatches rather than deliberate unkindness.
