Is same-sex marriage legal in Sri Lanka?

Ravana Tour Specialist August 22, 2026

No, same-sex marriage is not legally recognised or permitted in Sri Lanka. The legal framework of the country and its constitution do not really make room for same-sex civil unions or marriage provisions.

Family law in Sri Lanka is mostly shaped by a mix of religious institutions (Buddhist, Kandyan, Islamic, and Roman-Dutch law), and these bodies define marriage only as a union between a man and a woman. Because of that, today there is no real legal route for LGBTQ+ residents to marry inside the country.
