Is Minneriya National Park Good for Birdwatching?

Ravana Tour Specialist September 27, 2026

Yes. Minneriya is a great place for birdwatching. More than 170 bird species have been recorded there. You can see birds in the reservoir area, in grasslands, in scrub, and in the dry-zone forest.

People may spot waterbirds, raptors, species found only in Sri Lanka, and birds that arrive only in certain seasons.

So it still makes sense to visit Minneriya even if big elephant herds are not gathered near the reservoir.

Along with Kaudulla and Giritale, this region is an Important Bird Area. It shows how valuable the whole landscape is for wildlife.

If birds are what you care about most, let the safari guide know before you go. A game drive that aims only at elephants may miss spots where birds are actually easier to watch. For a birder, those spots can feel much more worthwhile.
