Is it safe to ride a motorcycle at night in Sri Lanka?
Riding a motorcycle at night in Sri Lanka can be riskier than going out in daylight. Visibility drops fast after dark. Street lights are often weak or missing. Traffic can behave in ways you do not expect. Animals may step onto the road without warning. Because of this, visitors should skip extra-long rides after sunset when they can.
Many rural stretches are not well lit. Turns may look unclear until you are close. Potholes can be hard to spot. You might also meet pedestrians on the road. Some parked vehicles appear where you do not expect them. Animals can be especially difficult to see at night.
In mountain areas, fog and rain can make things worse and reduce what you can see. If you do not know the local roads, try to reach your place to stay before dark. If you must ride at night, stay on roads that are in good shape. Slow down. Check that your lights work properly. Keep more space than usual from other vehicles.
