Is flash photography allowed inside the Dambulla caves?

Ravana Tour Specialist August 14, 2026

No, flash photography is strictly prohibited inside the Dambulla Cave Temple to guard the ancient murals and statues from light degradation or anything like that. You can still take photos without flash; however, turning your back to a Buddha statue for a selfie is also forbidden, yes.

These cave murals, dating back beyond 2,000 years, are exceptionally delicate, and sudden bursts of bright light can trigger lasting harm. Continuous flash use weakens and fades the natural pigments that were used in these historic works. When you visit, make sure your camera or smartphone flash is turned off manually before entering the whole complex. Security personnel keep an active watch in the area, so if you violate the rule, your camera may be confiscated, or you could be asked to leave on the spot.
