Is Arugam Bay suitable for beginner surfers?
Yeah, Arugam Bay is a good fit for people who are new to surfing. It has a few sheltered areas where the waves feel gentle, mellow, and more forgiving. A lot of locals and visitors treat it like one of the safest and best places in Sri Lanka to learn how to surf.
Even if the Main Point has strong surf and it’s made for advanced surfers, you can still find calmer breaks a short distance away. Places like Whiskey Point, Peanut Farm, and Baby Point tend to deliver softer, slower-breaking waves, mostly over sandy bottoms. That combination gives beginners a decent environment to practise standing up quickly and keeping balance without getting slammed. Also, the region is filled with certified surf schools and experienced local instructors, and they usually teach with beginner-focused plans, step by step.
