Is an International Driving Permit enough in Sri Lanka?
A valid International Driving Permit can work for some motorcycle riders in Sri Lanka. Still, it depends on what is written on the permit and on local rules. Some riders might need extra steps, like Sri Lankan driving recognition or a short-term authorisation.
In February 2026, Sri Lanka Police shared guidance on this topic. It says that a valid International Driving Permit can count as driving authorisation when it covers the right vehicle class. Even so, guidance from different countries may not match.
For instance, UK advice says British visitors using hired vehicles should bring a 1949 International Driving Permit. It also says they need to get a Sri Lankan recognition permit. So it is best to confirm the rules that apply to you.
Look at what your country requires, what your licence allows, and which motorcycle category you ride. You can check with Sri Lanka’s Department of Motor Traffic or another official authority.
