How to stop Sri Lankan leeches from biting?
Apply a strong DEET-based insect repellent, then rub an Ayurvedic Siddhalepa balm directly onto your ankles, or wear tightly woven leech socks pulled firmly over your trousers. During rainforest treks in areas like the Sinharaja Forest Reserve, try not to brush against wet foliage.
If a leech manages to latch onto your skin, do not yank it off forcefully. The jaws may remain embedded and lead to a tropical infection. Instead, put a pinch of salt, a lit match, or a single drop of hand sanitiser near it so it detaches naturally.
