How strictly should I follow my Sri Lanka travel itinerary?

Treat your itinerary more like a rough guide than a strict law. While you definitely need to book trains and popular hotels well in advance, you should leave your daily schedule wide open.

Why? Because Sri Lanka isn’t built for strict timetables. Driving from one town to the next almost always takes longer than the map says—between the narrow roads, the tuk-tuks, and the stray cows, “quick” trips turn into long ones fast. Plus, the weather here is wild; you might leave a sunny beach and end up in a monsoon on the other side of the island. My advice? Hire a private driver if you can for the freedom to change plans on the fly, or pick a central base like the Cultural Triangle and do day trips from there. Just don’t go crazy trying to book every single hour. You’ll burn out. The only thing you must be strict about is the Kandy-to-Ella train tickets and hotels during the high season—get those sorted early, and wing the rest.
