How do I get from Mattala Airport to Colombo?

From Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport (HRI) to Colombo, you will mostly go by vehicle along the Southern Expressway (E01). The distance is around 250 kilometres, and in practice, it takes three to three and a half hours, depending on traffic, weather, and timing, give or take.

Because Mattala does not have a consistent public transport setup waiting directly at the terminal, pre-booking a private taxi is highly suggested. If you want an alternative route, you can also use a local tuk-tuk to reach the nearby Hambantota or Makumbura bus stations, then take an air-conditioned coach onward to Colombo.
