How can I protect myself from mosquito bites while travelling in Sri Lanka?
You can keep yourself safer by consistently using EPA-registered insect repellents with DEET, Picaridin, or IR3535 in them, and also wearing protective clothing. At the same time, try to stay indoors, meaning in air-conditioned spaces or places that are well screened.
Bite prevention is the most effective defence against dengue, period. Use repellent on all exposed skin and reapply exactly in line with the product label, especially after swimming or if you are sweating a lot. If you use sunscreen, put the sunscreen on first and let it dry fully. Then add the mosquito repellent over it. Also, using permethrin-treated clothing and gear adds another protection step, and it is very effective.
