Do Sri Lankan drivers act as guides?

Yes, many drivers in Sri Lanka work in a dual role as “Chauffeur Tourist Guides”. They are professionally trained and also licensed by the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA). These authorised guides are qualified to manage small groups, up to seven passengers at a time, and during the day they handle both secure transport in air-conditioned vehicles and richer historical and cultural narration, especially at the major heritage sites.

For larger crowds travelling in luxury coaches, the duties are usually divided between a dedicated driver and a separate National Tourist Guide Lecturer.
