Are Sri Lankan intercity trains air-conditioned?

On Sri Lankan intercity trains, only the First Class carriages are fully air-conditioned. The Second and Third Class carriages do not have air conditioning and rely on open windows and ceiling fans for ventilation instead.

If you want comfort and very strict temperature control, then booking First Class is essential. But many photographers and backpackers still prefer Second Class reserved seating, because the open windows give a refreshing cross-breeze and make it easier for unobstructed photos of the tea plantations and mountain landscapes.
