Are motorcycles allowed on Sri Lankan expressways?

Ravana Tour Specialist October 14, 2026

No, motorcycles cannot use Sri Lanka’s expressway system. This rule applies no matter the engine size. If you are riding between towns, you should stay on normal highways and other allowed roads. Do not enter controlled access expressways.

The Road Development Authority groups motorcycles as vehicles not allowed on Sri Lankan expressways. This covers the Southern Expressway and the Colombo–Katunayake Expressway. It still applies even if the bike is a large touring model.

Before you set off, plan a route that uses the A class national highway network. Some map or navigation apps may suggest expressway sections. If that happens, double-check the route details and skip any restricted roads.
