Are motorcycle helmets compulsory in Sri Lanka?
Yes, in Sri Lanka, anyone riding a motorcycle must wear an approved helmet. This also applies to the person sitting behind, the pillion passenger. The helmet has to be worn by each person while travelling on public roads.
Sri Lanka’s Motor Traffic Act, Section 158, says motorcycle riders and passengers must wear an approved protective helmet. You should make sure the helmet fits well. Check it for visible cracks. Look at the straps too, and confirm they are not damaged. Also watch for other signs that the helmet has worn out.
A full-face helmet that fits properly can be a good option for longer trips. It helps add protection for the face. Gloves and other gear are still a separate matter. Protective gloves, abrasion-resistant clothing, and strong boots are advised, even though they are not part of the helmet rule.
