About This Tour

Plan an 11-day private trip around Sri Lanka. It mixes adventure, quiet nature spots, and time on the coast.
First, spend time around Kegalle. You can visit Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage and Pinnawala Open Zoo.
Next, go to Kitulgala. You can do outdoor activities along the Kelani River.
After that, visit Ratnapura. Learn about gemstone traditions there.
Then head to the Sinharaja Rainforest area. You can walk through the thick green scenery.

Day 01Airport → Kegalle | Welcome to Sri Lanka’s Green Countryside⌄

When you arrive at Bandaranaike International Airport, you will be picked up by your own tourist driver. Then you head toward Kegalle.

You will pass through small towns and green areas. You can stop for drinks or snacks during the trip.

Once you reach your accommodation, check in. After that, the rest of the day is yours. You can take it easy, or you can go for a quiet walk nearby to enjoy the area.

Day 02Kegalle → Pinnawala | Elephant Orphanage & Open Zoo Experience⌄

After breakfast, head to Pinnawala. Visit the well-known Elephant Orphanage. There, you can see Asian elephants up close. You will also learn how people look after them and help with conservation. If the plan matches the day’s timing, you might also catch a moment when the elephants bathe in the Maha Oya River.

Next, go to Pinnawala Open Zoo. The zoo has many animals. Some of them are native to Sri Lanka. Walk around the grounds and take your time. Stop for lunch at a local restaurant.

In the afternoon, return to Kegalle. You will have free time at your place to rest, or you can drive around the nearby countryside.

Day 03Kegalle → Kitulgala | Journey to the Tropical River Valley⌄

After breakfast, finish checking out. Then head for Kitulgala. The route will take you past quiet countryside, small towns, and rolling green hills.

Take a short break if you want a cold drink. You can also pause for photos during the trip. After that, continue on toward the tropical river valley.

When you arrive, check into your place by the river. Settle in and take in the calm atmosphere.

In the afternoon, you can unwind along the Kelani River. Or you can walk around the nearby village to see what is there.

Day 04Kitulgala | River Rafting & Jungle Activities⌄

Have breakfast first, then get ready for a day of exploring around Kitulgala.

You can take part in optional white-water rafting on the Kelani River. This depends on how the river looks that day and whether it is a good fit for you.

After that, head back for lunch. Spend a bit of time relaxing too.

In the afternoon, you can arrange an optional activity with a local guide: a nature walk, birdwatching, a visit to Belilena in Kitulgala, or a visit to natural bathing spots nearby.

Day 05Kitulgala → Bopath Ella → Ratnapura | Waterfalls & Gemstone Traditions⌄

Eat breakfast in Kitulgala, then get going to Ratnapura. On the way, pause at Bopath Ella Waterfall, close to Kuruwita.

Keep travelling and reach Ratnapura in time for lunch. After lunch, stop by a well-known gemstone museum or workshop. Learn about the local gem industry while you are there.

When you are done, go to your accommodation and check in. Take it easy during the afternoon with some free time.

Day 06Ratnapura → Sinharaja | Entering the Rainforest Region⌄

After you finish breakfast, check out. Then head toward the Kudawa gate area in Sinharaja Rainforest. On the drive, you will pass by small villages and rubber plantations. You will also see stretches of green countryside.

You will reach your accommodation. Have lunch there, then get comfortable. If the timing works and the weather is suitable, you can join a short guided walk near the forest area.

Day 07Sinharaja Rainforest | Guided Tropical Forest Exploration⌄

Start your day with breakfast before the optional guided trip into the rainforest at Sinharaja. Walk along the marked paths with a trained nature guide who is allowed to lead visitors. Pause now and then to watch birds, look at small streams, and note the local plants. After that, head back to your place to eat lunch and rest. In the afternoon, take it easy in the quiet area, or set up a brief extra nature visit if you want.

Day 08Sinharaja → Elpitiya → Balapitiya | From Rainforest to Beach⌄

Start your day with breakfast. Then head out from the rainforest area and make your way toward Balapitiya via Elpitiya.

Pause for lunch and grab some drinks before you keep going to the southwest coast.

Check in at your beach accommodation. After that, spend the afternoon however you like.

Unwind at the pool, take an easy walk along the beach, or just sit and watch the sunset over the Indian Ocean.

Day 09Balapitiya → Madu River | Mangroves & Cinnamon Island⌄

After breakfast, go to Madu Ganga, where you can take an optional boat trip along the mangroves. Look around the lagoon and, if a stop is offered, go ashore on a small island. There you can see how people make cinnamon in the traditional way.

Then head back to Balapitiya for lunch. Spend the rest of the afternoon unwinding at your beach stay.

In the evening, you are on your own to enjoy a slow meal by the sea.

Day 10Balapitiya → Kosgoda | Turtle Conservation & Beach Leisure⌄

Start your morning with an easy breakfast, then head to a well-known turtle conservation site in Kosgoda. There, you can hear how people are helping protect local marine turtles.

After that, go back to Balapitiya. The rest of the day is yours to manage. You can just sit on the beach and unwind. Or use the comforts at your hotel. If you want, you can also book an optional spa service.

Finish the trip with your last evening near the ocean.

Day 11Balapitiya → Bandaranaike International Airport | Departure⌄

Have your breakfast, then make the most of the last hours along Sri Lanka’s southwest coast. After that, you will check out of your accommodation.

A private driver will take you from there to Bandaranaike International Airport. The pickup time will be set based on your international flight schedule and the time you need to check in at the airport.

Visits to Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage and Pinnawala Open Zoo depend on opening hours and local conditions. White-water rafting may run only when the weather is suitable. Rainforest trips and boat safaris are also dependent on the forecast. Wildlife sightings are not promised. Optional activities and accommodation arrangements depend on availability and the services confirmed in your quotation. If you arrive late or leave early, the plan might need to change.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can we visit both Pinnawala facilities on Day 02?

Day 02 allows a visit to the Elephant Orphanage followed by Pinnawala Open Zoo if both are operating and the day’s timing works. Guests can also choose fewer stops and more leisure time in Kegalle.

Can we choose between rafting and Belilena on Day 04?

Yes. White-water rafting and forest-area excursions are optional. The best choice depends on water conditions, your interests, and the time required for a local guided visit.

Why are there two nights near Sinharaja on this route?

Day 06 is mainly for reaching the Kudawa entrance area and settling in, while Day 07 allows an unhurried guided rainforest excursion without an additional hotel change.

Will the Madu River excursion always include a cinnamon island stop?

Not necessarily. Island stops depend on the boat operator, current access, weather and the experience arranged. We can confirm the available route when you request the excursion.

Can we skip Kosgoda and spend Day 10 entirely on Balapitiya Beach?

Yes. The Kosgoda visit is a suggested nearby experience. Your private travel plan can keep Day 10 free for beach relaxation or another optional activity you prefer.
