Can I go motorcycle touring during Sri Lanka’s rainy season?
Yes, motorcycle touring can still work in Sri Lanka during the rainy season. Rain comes in waves, and it hits areas at different times. That means some roads may stay usable even when other places get hit hard. You still need to plan for wet riding. Expect slick asphalt, lower sight distance, and the chance of water on the road. In some spots, flooding can slow or stop travel.
The timing of the monsoons matters. During the southwest monsoon, heavy rain may target some southern stretches. At the same time, parts of the east and north can be less affected, so riding may feel easier there. When the northeast monsoon arrives, some eastbound trips may become more difficult.
Bring gear that stays dry. Ride slower when the surface is wet. Watch for loose gravel, painted lines that get slippery, and puddles or standing water. In higher areas, long spells of rain can raise the chance of landslides.
If local officials post strong weather alerts, it is smarter to pause and wait. Continuing on the same plan can be riskier than shifting the ride to later.
