Can two people travel on one motorcycle in Sri Lanka?
Yes, two people can travel legally on a standard motorcycle in Sri Lanka, as long as the bike is built to take a passenger. The driver and the back passenger both need approved helmets. They also must follow the safety rules that apply.
Section 158 of Sri Lanka’s Motor Traffic Act says a rider may not take more than one pillion passenger on a conventional motorcycle that has no sidecar. The passenger has to sit on a proper seat behind the rider. That seat should be fixed and secure.
If you are going on a long trip, the motorcycle should be set up for the rider and passenger. Look for passenger footrests. Also check that there is enough space for luggage and that the passenger seat feels stable.
When you carry two adults plus luggage, the extra weight can change how the bike handles. It can affect balance and braking. This matters a lot on steep mountain roads. Do not exceed the load limit given by the manufacturer.
