What driving licence do I need to rent a motorcycle in Sri Lanka?

Ravana Tour Specialist October 14, 2026

To rent a motorcycle in Sri Lanka and ride it legally, you need a licence or driving paper that matches the bike’s engine size. Sri Lanka uses two main motorcycle groups. If the motorcycle is up to 100cc, it fits Category A1. If it is more than 100cc, it falls under Category A.

The Department of Motor Traffic treats motorcycles as a separate class from passenger cars. Category A can include what is covered by A1. Still, a licence that is only for cars does not automatically let you ride motorcycles.

If you are visiting from overseas, check that your foreign licence already covers motorcycle riding in the right category. You may also need an International Driving Permit or other local documents, if required. Before you sign with a rental shop, verify the motorcycle model matches your category, and make sure the rental company will accept your documents.
