Is Udawalawe Elephant Transit Home an ethical attraction?
Udawalawe Elephant Transit Home is run by the government, and it works as a wildlife rehab site. It is not built for elephant tourism where people do hands-on activities. The main goal is to look after rescued calves and help prepare the right animals for later release.
When people visit, they watch the elephants from a set viewing spot. You will not find the usual ride services. You also cannot pet or feed the elephants as part of the standard visit. These limits help keep the focus on rehab. They reduce extra human contact that can slow progress. At the same time, each animal welfare call is made by wildlife staff and trained professionals.
