Do Sri Lankan travel agencies use government-licensed guides?
Legitimate travel agencies in Sri Lanka really rely on guides who are properly trained and hold a licence from the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA). If you use an unlicensed guide, it is illegal, and it also makes many quality and safety promises ineffective.
A licensed guide has to go through strict training focused on history, heritage, and basic first aid. They also have official SLTDA identity cards, which give them free entry into cultural places and national parks. Before you start any tour, make sure you ask to see your driver or guide’s official credentials and check them on the spot.
