Car rental services are available at Colombo Airport, and, you know, a few recognised agencies keep their desks in the arrival hall. You can book a self-drive vehicle, or you can hire a car with a professional chauffeur, depending on what you really prefer.

Important Self-Drive Requirements:

  • An International Driving Permit (IDP) alone is not enough; it needs more steps.
  • Your IDP has to be validated by the Automobile Association of Ceylon (AAC); otherwise, it will not work.
  • Alternatively, you may get a temporary Sri Lankan driving permit through the Department of Motor Traffic. Many rental agencies will handle the paperwork for you ahead of time for a small fee, which is pretty convenient.
