Are sapphires a good investment?

High-quality, unheated Ceylon sapphires are often viewed as excellent physical assets, and in practice they have shown steady long-term increases, so they work as a practical shield against inflation and economic instability.

Still, not every sapphire fits the investment-grade label. Plenty of commercial, heat-treated stones, especially under two carats, tend to keep some retail value, but they rarely climb quickly. For meaningful profits, the buyer usually needs to go after uncommon, untreated stones with outstanding chroma and clarity, generally more than three carats, and get them at or near wholesale costs, backed by respected GIA or GRS paperwork.
