Where are moonstones found in Sri Lanka?
The absolute best quality moonstones in Sri Lanka are mined around the southwestern village of Meetiyagoda, which is set a short distance inland from the coastal town of Hikkaduwa. This small area is globally well-known for creating rare moonstones; they show a crisp spectral blue glow.
While the milky moonstones or rainbow moonstones you may see elsewhere in India and Madagascar generally feel less intense, the Meetiyagoda stones are markedly clear and display a floating electric blue adularescence. When visitors arrive, they can walk through the old, water-filled pit mines, look at rough stones getting washed, and also watch local artisans cut and polish the gems using traditional hand-powered lapidary wheels.
