Why are Ceylon sapphires so expensive?

Ravana Tour Specialist August 19, 2026

Ceylon sapphires command high prices because they are, unusually, geologically rare, and the older pit mining methods are very labour-intensive, plus worldwide demand just keeps rising for those specific colour profiles. To end up with a faceted gem-quality stone, you often have to move tonnes of earth, sometimes manually, and it feels slow at every step.

After the digging costs, the cutting and polishing work has to be handled by highly skilled artisans who can push the stone’s light return and colour saturation while keeping carat loss as low as possible. On top of that, unheated sapphires with exceptional clarity and colour are extremely scarce. And as ethical sourcing matters more for international buyers, Sri Lanka’s environmentally minded small-scale mining practices also contribute a premium to what the final market value becomes.
