How can you tell if a Ceylon sapphire is real?

A true Ceylon sapphire can be spotted from its natural inclusions, the absence of internal gas bubbles, and a lab paper that clearly confirms where it came from and what mineral it is made of. Real stones very rarely look perfectly flawless to the naked eye, or even when magnified a bit more.

If you want to verify a stone’s authenticity, use a jeweller’s loupe and look closely for straight-looking colour banding plus tiny rutile needles, often called “silk”. Man-made sapphires frequently show curved striae, or in some cases, neat little spherical bubbles that got trapped during production. Since contemporary synthetics are really advanced, the only no-excuses way for a buyer is to ask for an independent gemmological report from a recognised body like the GIA or GRS, or, if you prefer, the local NGJA.
