What does a traditional Sri Lankan village breakfast include?

A traditional Sri Lankan village breakfast usually includes Kiribath (milk rice) and/or freshly cooked hoppers, served with a fiery red onion and chilli paste called Lunu Miris. It is almost always presented next to a rich fish curry made with coconut milk, plus sometimes a mild savoury lentil dhal.

This food setup is meant to give heavy, long-lasting energy for morning work. Along with the main items, you may also come across pol sambol (grated coconut, chilli, and lime), string hoppers, or boiled sweet potatoes, and not much else. People also often finish with a cup of strong, sweet Ceylon black tea, sometimes brewed with ginger or even cardamom.
