Yes, the Yapahuwa Rock Fortress is totally worth the detour for history nerds and architecture lovers. It has this magnificent steep ornamental stairway that feels on par with Sigiriya, even in the way the stonework looks. Also, it stays surprisingly uncrowded compared to the main Cultural Triangle spots, which is kind of amazing, though you will still want to go earlier.

For a short stretch in the 13th century, it functioned as the capital of Sri Lanka, and that huge granite mass held the sacred Tooth Relic. On the prominent stairway, the elaborate stone carvings of lions and mythical beasts are among the best examples of ancient Sinhalese craftsmanship. And because it is a little off the main tourist road between Kurunegala and Anuradhapura, you will probably end up having the whole dramatic historical setting all to yourself.
