Is it safe to drive near Habarana at night?

Driving near Habarana after dark can be very risky and is strongly discouraged, mainly because wild elephants often appear and cross the unlit roads, sometimes suddenly. Elephant-to-vehicle impacts are widely cited as a key reason behind serious crashes in the area.

Habarana acts as an important wildlife corridor, linking Minneriya and Kaudulla National Parks. The elephants regularly move across the main highways once evening falls, and after dusk the situation gets worse. Since there is little or no street lighting, you can barely notice these large animals until it is already too late. If you have to move through the Cultural Triangle at night, it is better to book a local professional driver who knows the ground and not attempt to manage a rental car or scooter by yourself.
