How many painted caves are in Dambulla?
The Dambulla Cave Temple complex includes five main painted cave enclosures open to the public, and they collectively hold 153 statues of Lord Buddha.
In the surrounding granite rock massif, there are over 80 documented cave sanctuaries, but these five core caverns – the Shrine of the Lord of the Gods, Cave of the Great Kings, Great New Monastery, Western Temple, and the Second New Shrine – are the ones with the celebrated ceiling frescoes and the statuary that can be traced back more than 2,000 years.
