Can you legally buy alcohol at a hotel on a Poya Day?
No, you cannot legally buy alcohol at a hotel, restaurant, or supermarket in Sri Lanka on a Poya Day. During these monthly Buddhist full moon observances, alcohol sales are strictly banned nationwide, and that means you will not find it available for purchase on those days.
Poya Days have real religious weight in Sri Lanka. On those dates, licensed bars, liquor shops, and even hotel restaurants are required by law to stop selling alcohol for 24 hours. Still, most foreign guests are generally allowed to drink in the privacy of their hotel rooms if they bought the alcohol before the Poya Day began, either from a local liquor shop or from duty-free arrangements.
