Is public transport reliable for tourists in Sri Lanka?

Public transport in Sri Lanka is pretty extensive, but it is not exactly strictly punctual or dependable, especially if your schedule is tight. Trains and buses often run late, and many intercity routes end up taking longer than they promise in advance.

You can still count on public transport to get you to where you need to go, but it fits best for flexible backpackers and travellers who aren’t rushing or trying to beat the clock. Trains, in particular the well-known scenic Kandy to Ella line, can experience delays of an hour or even more. Tourists should treat public transport as a genuine, more adventurous cultural encounter, instead of a rigid, time-sensitive way to move around.
