When is the Esala Perahera held?
The festival happens every year in July or August, and it’s really timed with the lunar calendar during the Sinhala month of Esala, not just “any” time. The biggest processions end up finishing on the Nikini Full Moon Poya day.
Since it strictly tracks the moon cycles, the actual dates move a little from year to year. For instance, in 2026, the public procession runs from August 18 until August 28. If you’re planning a trip, check the official Temple of the Tooth lunar timetable about six months ahead, just to lock in lodging for those busiest days.
