Are Colombo street dogs aggressive to tourists?

Colombo street dogs are mostly docile, used to lots of people moving around all day, and usually not aggressive toward tourists, though a small group can get territorial at night or when they are guarding puppies.

Most stray dogs across Sri Lanka are community-fed, and they just ignore pedestrians, like it’s part of the street rhythm. Rabies is still endemic on the island, so any bite or even a scratch becomes a serious medical problem. If a dog barks or comes toward you, do not run; just keep walking past calmly and act like you do not notice them. Never try to pet a sleeping street dog, do not feed it, and do not make sudden noise to startle it. If you are walking through dim residential lanes late at night, carry a small flashlight or, if needed, a stick to deter any overly protective animals.
