• The Experience: During the dry season, the water in the ancient Minneriya Tank recedes, revealing lush grasslands. Elephants from all surrounding forests migrate here to graze and bathe. It is not uncommon to see herds of 200 to 300 elephants at once. Watching baby elephants play in the water while the matriarchs stand guard is a heartwarming sight that stays with you forever.
• Best Time to Visit: The Gathering peaks from July to September. If you are visiting during these months, Minneriya is unmissable.
• The Vibe: Minneriya is generally less chaotic than Yala. It provides a more serene opportunity to observe elephant behavior up close.
