Frequent Questions
Is Chilaw good for swimming?
The sea in Chilaw can be rough and has a steep drop in some areas. It is better to enjoy the beach for walking and sunsets, and use the hotel pool for swimming. However, Muthupanthiya side has calmer spots.
Why stay 7 days in Chilaw?
Chilaw is a “Hidden Hub.” Instead of moving hotels every day, you stay in one place and do day trips to wetlands (Anawilundawa), dams (Deduru Oya), and cultural sites. It is a very relaxed, non-tiring holiday.
What is special about Anawilundawa?
It is a “Ramsar” site, meaning it is protected by international treaty. It is a system of tanks built by ancient kings that now serves as a critical habitat for birds. It is a photographer’s dream.
Can we eat the prawns?
Absolutely. Chilaw has the freshest prawns and crabs in Sri Lanka. Most hotels will cook the catch you buy from the lagoon fishermen.
Is the Prawn Farm tour smelly?
Modern aquaculture farms are well-managed. It is an educational tour to see how the “Blue Gold” of Sri Lanka is produced. It is very interesting for those interested in farming/fishing.
Is it crowded?
No. Unlike Galle or Ella, Chilaw is not a major tourist trap. You will mostly see locals, giving you a very authentic Sri Lankan experience without the crowds.
