Daily Itinerary

01

The Caves of Ascetics Route

Route: Airport ➔ Anuradhapura
4 Hours 170 km

Arrive and transfer to a hotel near the Tissa Wewa lake. In the evening, visit Vessagiriya, a complex of caves used by monks over 2,000 years ago. It is quiet, non-touristy, and perfect for climbing the rocks to watch the sunset over the paddy fields. Overnight in Anuradhapura.

02

The Mystery of the Star Gate Route

Route: Isurumuniya ➔ Ranmasu Uyana
Morning & Evening Cycling/Walking

Visit the famous Isurumuniya Rock Temple to see the “Lovers” carving. Then, walk to the adjacent Ranmasu Uyana (Royal Goldfish Park). Here, you will find the controversial “Sakwala Chakraya” (Star Gate) carved into a rock, which some believe depicts the universe or acts as a portal. Spend time analyzing this mystery. Overnight in Anuradhapura.

03

The Northern Wilderness Route

Route: Anuradhapura ➔ Tantrimale ➔ Anuradhapura
1.5 Hours 40 km

Take a drive to the remote Tantrimale Raja Maha Vihara. This is one of the oldest settlements in Sri Lanka. Walk through the giant rock boulders, see the ancient Bodhi tree, and explore the pre-historic caves with drawings dating back thousands of years. It feels like a journey to the edge of civilization. Overnight in Anuradhapura.

04

The Black Water Pond Route

Route: Anuradhapura ➔ Mihintale ➔ Kaludiya Pokuna
30 Minutes 15 km

Skip the crowded main stairs of Mihintale for now. Instead, go to the darker, quieter side: Kaludiya Pokuna (Black Water Pond). This is a ruined forest monastery with untouched nature. Later, climb Mihintale Rock (Aradhana Gala) in the late afternoon to catch the 360-degree sunset view without the midday heat. Overnight in Anuradhapura.

05

The Land of Lakes (Leopards) Route

Route: Anuradhapura ➔ Wilpattu National Park
45 Minutes 30 km + Safari

Anuradhapura is very close to the entrance of Wilpattu National Park (Sri Lanka’s largest park). Spend a full day on a Jeep Safari. Wilpattu is unique for its “Willus” (natural sand-rimmed lakes) and high leopard population. It is much greener and denser than Yala. Overnight in Anuradhapura.

06

Engineering Marvels Route

Route: Abhayagiriya ➔ Twin Ponds ➔ Nachchaduwa
City Tour Archaeology

Explore the massive Abhayagiriya Stupa and the Samadhi Buddha Statue. Visit the Kuttam Pokuna (Twin Ponds) and Eth Pokuna (Elephant Pond) to understand ancient hydraulic engineering. In the evening, drive to the massive Nachchaduwa Tank bund for a relaxing picnic, watching the water stretch to the horizon. Overnight in Anuradhapura.

07

The Giant & Departure Route

Route: Anuradhapura ➔ Avukana ➔ Airport
4.5 Hours 180 km

Frequent Questions

Is 7 days too long for Anuradhapura?

Not with this itinerary. We have included Wilpattu (Safari) and Tantrimale (Adventure), which are day trips outside the city. It turns Anuradhapura into a “Hub” rather than just a stopover.

What is the “Star Gate”?

It is a mysterious circular diagram carved onto a rock face in Ranmasu Uyana. Similar carvings are found in Peru and Egypt. Local legends say it is a portal to the universe, and it attracts many curiosity seekers.

Is Wilpattu better than Yala?

Wilpattu is more beautiful (dense forest + lakes) and much less crowded than Yala. While Yala has more elephants, Wilpattu is excellent for leopards and bears, offering a more private experience.

Can we cycle everywhere?

Most of the inner city (Ruwanwelisaya, Twin Ponds area) is perfect for cycling because it is flat and shaded by trees. However, for Tantrimale and Wilpattu, you need a vehicle.

What is special about Tantrimale?

It is very ancient and located on a massive rocky plateau. It feels very spiritual and isolated. The prehistoric cave art proves humans lived there long before history was written.

Is the weather hot?

Yes, Anuradhapura is in the dry zone. It can be hot (30°C+). That is why our plan schedules activities for early mornings and late evenings, with rest or museum visits during the midday heat.
