Do everyday Sri Lankans eat beef curries?

While beef curry is eaten in Sri Lanka, it is not an everyday staple for the majority of people due to religious, cultural, and economic reasons.

A big share of Sri Lankans, especially practising Buddhists and Hindus, abstain from consuming beef altogether. As a result, chicken, fish, and fully vegetarian curries that use dhal or jackfruit are far more common in regular homes as well as in local restaurants. Still, beef is widely consumed by the island’s Muslim and Christian communities, and it is easy to find in major supermarkets, plus in places aimed at tourists.
