Do I have to take off my shoes inside a Sri Lankan home?
Yes, it is a strict cultural norm in Sri Lanka to take off your shoes before stepping into someone’s home.
It shows respect and also keeps the inside clean, because many people in Sri Lanka sit or move around barefoot indoors. You should leave your footwear neatly near the front door, or on the small porch, not in the middle of the walkway. This practice applies in general when you go into Buddhist temples, Hindu kovils, and sometimes even at certain boutique shops or guesthouse reception areas.
