Can foreigners legally drive tuk-tuks in Sri Lanka?

Foreigners can drive tuk-tuks legally in Sri Lanka only if they obtain an International Driving Permit (IDP), which is specifically stamped for a three-wheeler, and then have it verified by the Automobile Association of Ceylon (AAC). Having a regular IDP with a standard car stamp is not enough; it does not give you legal authority to operate a tuk-tuk.

Therefore, travellers must check what their original home licence actually allows. If their home licence already includes a motorcycle/three-wheeler category, they can request the correct IDP accordingly. If not, they may need to ask for a short-term Sri Lankan driving permit through the Department of Motor Traffic in Colombo instead. In practice, many well-known tuk-tuk rental agencies will take care of the AAC verification step for the traveller before arrival.
