Are there wild elephants walking in Sigiriya town?

Wild elephants do not usually walk through the commercial centre of Sigiriya town, but they often roam the nearby rural outskirts, jungle roads, and field edges, especially after dark.

In the Sigiriya region, there are active elephant corridors that link Minneriya, Kaudulla, and Hurulu Eco Parks. During daylight, encounters in the busy visitor areas are incredibly rare; meanwhile, the elephants regularly cross the main Habarana-Sigiriya road and linger around jungle-fringed eco-lodges at night. For safety, guests should always take a tuk-tuk or taxi instead of strolling or cycling on dark, unlit peripheral roads.
